An independent professional's take on the latest news and trends in global financial markets

The disaster that was RBS: an Independent Investor event

What really caused the spectacular collapse of the Royal Bank of Scotland in 2008? Why have no senior bankers ever been prosecuted for their part in the reckless lending spree that required a huge taxpayer bailout to resolve? How did it happen and what can we do to prevent this kind of corporate disaster happening again? Why was the Blair government so keen to encourage RBS in its breakneck expansion strategy? What are the risks of another major bank collapse in future? You can hear and debate answers to all these questions at an Independent Investor event I am hosting in central London at 9am on December 2nd 2014.

The guest speaker is Ian Fraser, the award-winning Scottish author and journalist, whose book Shredded: Inside RBS, The Bank That Broke Britain has been long-listed for this year’s FT/McKinsey Business Book of the Year. Tickets for this event – an hour of discussion and debate, including Q and As from the audience – are now on sale. You can find out more – and reserve a ticket – by following this link to the event website, which is being organised jointly by Independent Investor and the How To Academy. Light refreshments available.

It is being held at the Savile Club in Mayfair, a convenient and comfortable venue that is less than a minute’s walk from Bond Street tube station. I very much hope that you will be able to join me and my invited speaker on the day. Ian’s book was two years in the making and is by far the best account of the RBS story, from triumph to disaster, that I have read. I am sure you won’t be disappointed. In addition, I would be happy to offer you any subscriber to my blog a 25% discount off the ticket price; simply go to the event page and enter the code Blograte when prompted.

What the pundits have said

about Ian’s book Shredded

“A gripping account … RBS was a rogue business, operating in what had become a rogue industry, with the connivance of government. Read it and weep”
Martin Wolf, Financial Times

A model of the journalist’s craft, Zola-esque in its broad and unsparing study of corporate hubris and nemesis and haunting in the questions it leaves in its wake”
Bill Jamieson, The Scotsman

“Not just the definitive book on the collapse of RBS but one of the best five books on the great financial collapse which changed the history of the 21st century, Ian pulls no punches in his conclusions”
Russell Napier, CLSA

“Impeccably researched and hard to put down at any point … The author pulls no punches”
Philip Augar, Financial Times

In Mr Fraser’s own words, Shredded “explores how, under Fred Goodwin, a former partner at accountants Deloitte, RBS became a rogue institution with few qualms about mis-selling financial products to individual and business customers in pursuit of profit, a cavalier disregard for the law and a warped idea of its own financial skills and strength”.
