An independent professional's take on the latest news and trends in global financial markets

About the author

I have been analysing and writing about financial markets for more than 35 years, initially as a business journalist on The Times, The Economist and The Independent, more recently as an investment professional and author/columnist/publisher. My main interests are in “big picture” investment issues – asset allocation, strategy and fund selection – but I also invest in a limimted number of private and listed equities where I see exceptional opportunities. I write a private circulation newsletter for a circle of professional and sophisticated investors and offer strategic advice on a consultancy basis (please contact me for more details).

My professional employment includes a number of directorships, including Genagro Services Ltd, founders of and advisers to the Brazilian farmland company Agrifirma Brazil, and Jupiter Primadona Growth Trust, an investment trust listed in London. Previous commitments include membership of the investment committee of D&G Asset Management, which specialises in managing prime central London residential property, and acting as an adviser to Smith & Williamson Investment Management. For three years, from February 2008 until January 2010, I was an independent non-executive director of Hargreaves Lansdown plc, the UK’s leading fund and stockbroking firm.

I have been writing a regular column in the Financial Times fund management section since 2008 and contribute regularly to The Spectator. Before that I wrote a weekly column on investment for The Independent for 12 years.I have written four books on investment and one on the game of bridge. My most recent book is Templeton’s Way With Money, co-authored with Dr Sandy Nairn, the CEO of Edinburgh Partners (published by John Wiley, 2012).

It is important to emphasise that any comments I make on this blog are entirely my own responsibility. They should not be treated as being the views of any of the companies of which I am a director or act as an adviser.  My professional livelihood depends on my retaining the ability to act with integrity and independence at all times. Please read the Investment Warnings page on this site carefully.

As a matter of policy Independent Investor does not seek, nor is it authorised, to give individual investment advice. It is not practical for me to give suitable individual investment advice in a general publication. I am however an Approved Person at an FSA-authorised firm and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment, as well as the holder of degrees in history and management from Cambridge and MIT respectively.

I welcome comments from professional investors and committed private investors. You can reach me on
